How to Take Care of Your Precious Gems and Jewelry...
Take a few moments every so often to look at your gems and jewelry closely. Notice if any of the prongs, clasps, or other parts of the metal "hardware" are worn or broken. If so, take them to a qualified jeweler for repair. It would be terrible to lose a valued item simply for want of an easy repair! Then take a look at the gems themselves. Are they chipped or loose in their mountings? Again, a qualified jeweler could help. There are many such jewelers around. A quick look in the Yellow Pages will give you a listing of them in your area. The main thing is to feel comfortable with this person handling your gems and jewelry. If you don't feel that way, please do find a jeweler who gives you that sense of reassurance!!

Most gemstones and jewelry are able to withstand a good cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush. Unless the jewelry is very delicate, simply soaking the entire piece in the soapy water and then gently brushing in all the cracks and crevices with the soft brush should bring the sparkle back. Rinse in warm water and allow to air dry on a soft towel. Make sure the drain is blocked so that nothing slips away from you. A mesh tea strainer is an ideal holder for small items during the soaking process.

Pearls, on the other hand, are organic in origin and should not be soaked in soapy water or scrubbed with a brush. The soap may be too harsh and the brush may mar the delicate surface of the pearl. A slightly dampened, soft, clean cloth can be used to gently rub away any surface dirt. Do not expose pearls to perfumes and makeup, if possible, as this may cause discoloration.
